Virginia Learner's Permit Test: What to Expect

Who can apply

In Virginia you can apply for a learner’s permit at 15 years and 6 monthsof age. Applicants under 18 must also complete an approved driver’s education course. You’ll need to bring documents proving your identity, Virginia residency, and legal presence — check the DMV’s current checklist before you go.

What’s on the test

The knowledge test has two parts, both based on the Virginia Driver’s Manual:

• A traffic-sign section that asks you to identify signs by their shape, color, and meaning.
• A general-knowledge section covering road rules, right of way, speed limits, safe driving, and alcohol laws.

You must pass both sections. Questions are multiple choice, and many are reworded versions of the manual’s key rules — which is exactly why practicing with realistic questions helps so much.

How it’s scored

Each section has its own passing requirement, and you need to clear both. Rather than aiming for the bare minimum, practice until you can score 80% or higher consistently. That margin means a couple of tricky questions won’t cost you the test.

How the test is given

The knowledge test is taken at a DMV customer service center, usually on a computer. If you don’t pass, you can retake it, though there may be a waiting period and a fee — another reason to practice until you’re confidently above the passing line first.

What happens after you pass

• You’ll receive your learner’s permit and can start supervised driving.
• Permit holders must practice with a licensed adult and follow Virginia’s holding-period and supervised-hours rules.
• After meeting the requirements, you move on to the road skills test for your license.
